The importance of location for businesses

I recently read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, which declared that the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills could be Australia’s answer to Silicon Valley with the emergence of several startups basing themselves in the area. It is also the site of the new Xero office in Sydney.

Sydney Harbour

Xero has always understood the importance of location for businesses and careful consideration is taken when we select a city for a new office. Our global offices are positioned in and near areas like San Francisco, London and Sydney, which are known for startups and creative talent.

The lure of these entrepreneurial cities for Xero is that our employees become part of a technological and creative community. These tech hubs become concentrated areas of collaboration and innovation, which is in alignment with our values and our vision of creating beautiful accounting software.

With Surry Hills being creative and fun – and “open 24 hours” – the Sydney team looks forward to supporting startups in the area, and connecting with our partners and clients in an easily accessible location. We’re close to the train station and Sydney airport, making it easy for partners and Xero staff to visit our office. In fact, you only have to see the reactions we’ve had from people who have visited our new office to know that we got the location right.

Right in the middle of Surry Hills

Another incentive for Xero to plant offices in tech hubs is the support from tech-friendly local governments. As mentioned in the article, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has vowed to encourage the government to support startup businesses and the digital economy.

While we may have the location right, I’m looking forward to working more closely with our clients and partners in Sydney. Our new office is about more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the continued growth of Xero Australia, with our other offices in Melbourne (Head Office), Brisbane and Canberra.

We look forward to welcoming you to Xero Sydney.

  8. Awesome location guys! We can attest to the power of an inspiring location too – we’re in beautiful Tauranga, with an office that takes in an almost 180 degree view of the harbour and Mount Maunganui. There are more and more software firms starting up down here… so the sense of community is really starting to flourish!
