Our first graduate day
We’ve always been interested in meeting people with different work experiences and technical skills and this year we’ve opened the doors even wider holding our first ever graduate day – a pretty cool way for the graduates and us to get to know each other better.
We decided to run things a bit like a speed dating event where we set up 10 minute interviews – focusing on either technical knowledge, role reversal (grads were encouraged to ask us the questions) and a general, “can you hold a decent conversation”, theme. And of course, no graduate day would be complete without the obligatory exercise of making something out of marshmallows and straws – perhaps a bit corny but extremely entertaining!
The most telling result of the “make your car cross over a bridge under its own steam” task was the group whose car, when positioned at the beginning of a beautifully constructed bridge, started well but stalled before reaching the end. I could hear our QA team’s collective (and completely unjustified, I might add) tut-tut – do you developers test anything? Funny.
Thanks to the guys and gals who came along, it was fun.
We’ll definitely be doing something again next year – perhaps substituting the marshmallows with eggs next time. Now that would be interesting!
