Xero Touch – accounting app for mobile
Xero Touch, our mobile app, is now available for free in the App Store.
This is the same accounting app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that’s also available when you login at m.xero.com. However, there are a few big advantages that come with installing the official iPhone version:
- Take photos of receipts and attach them directly to your expenses
- Use a 4 digit passcode to login quickly
- It runs faster, because the app is stored on your phone
We put together a fun video to illustrate some of the useful features of the app…
A lot of thought went into the design of our iPhone accounting app, focusing on ways to streamline the mobile experience: Quickly check your balances, quickly draft invoices with a few taps – even approve & send invoices straight from your phone, add expenses just by taking a photo of a receipt, tap to call customers & quickly add contact notes.
We think you’ll find it’s very smooth & snappy.
We also made the accounting app available on the iPad so you can get the same streamlined experience on the bigger screen. As always, you can still use the full version of Xero from your iPad (which we plan to make a bit more touch friendly).

Even though Xero Touch is available in the App Store, under the hood it’s running our standard HTML5 mobile web app. A big advantage of being a web app is that the data on your phone and the data in your accounting system are always in sync.
It was a slight ordeal getting the app thru Apple’s notorious approval process, but that’s a story for another day. With the iPhone version now approved our team is working hard on getting a version into the Google Android app store.
Let us know how Xero Touch is changing the way you do business. And be sure to leave a recommendation on the App Store. As always, let us know what other features you think would be useful.

Keen to hear more about your app store approval issues. Did you use Titanium for compiling the app or something else? Definitely need another blog post about the whole experience.
Great for a first release, look forward to updates. Still a bit buggy – my iPhone just had the scrolling “loading” graphic for hours since logging in, only way to get rid of it was to restart the phone. When it’s working it’s great though.
Good stuff with having an iPad version too =)
Ok shopping for new phone – this is awesome
Very good initiative. Please can you move on the Android App too (Android phones are huge sellers, greater than the iPhone).
I was very dissappointed to hear that Xero won’t be working on an Android or Windows Phone 7 app. Android is now at least as relevant as the iPhone, and Windows Phone 7 is an emerging player in the enterprise market.
There’s a certain irony that Xero is working toward the Cloud Office space in conjunction with Microsoft while refusing to natively support this extraordinary mobile platform that’s simply ideal for enterprises.
Oops there are two of us – the above comments are by different users with the same first name! Mine is the second comment.
@ Chris
According to #xerocon the android version of this app is on it’s way.
Great to see the new app. I run my business credit direct throught Xero so that all small items are simple (and fast) to reconcile, if I could add a simple pic of the reciepts to each as I reconciled that would be amazing! – Nice work anyway
Was supposed to say business “Credit Card” in last comment sorry.
You can get almost all of the same functionality as this app just by going to http://touch.xero.com so that works fine on Android / WP7. The only advantage to the iPhone app is the quick login and camera, which can’t be done through mobile web.
I think Xero is going about this the right way. Since they’re using Phonegap I assume it’s not too tricky to get an Android version out soon.
Great job guys, just what I had been waiting for!
Great work. Would like to see inventory items available when creating a new invoice. Would save time and mistakes on item pricing.
Thanks!
Doesn’t let me reconcile transactions or do any reporting?? Not much ggod to me otherwise?
ooOOo. android app will rule tbh.
Very cool! How about search functionality so we do not have to go through 12 pages of clients.
Just downloaded it to my phone, sleek and easy to use. Love your work!
Quick question, I have 2 separate Xero accounts under the same login, but can only see one on the app. Any hints?
Thanks guys
Woohoo! Finally arrived! An excellent start & I also like PIN to login. Are you able to advise the enhancement plan for regular tasks (eg. view transactions, reconcile, etc.)
It is a very good start and will be good for those that do lots of expense claims.
Going forward it needs more functionality. Reconciling being the main one though not sure how this will work on the limited screen realestate. An iPad version should be done that has all the functionality of the full website.
Looks like a good app, but would rather see you guys work on improving the main Xero functionality. I think it’s about time Xero has proper inventory (detail) tracking and costing. Love Xero but we’ll have to transition to another platform in the coming months due to lack on inventory features. Not every business is a service business. Something to consider.
Same as Andrew, would need inventory list to be available to make invoicing quick and easy. The main site is still quicker on the iPhone. But it’s a great step!
Thanks
So… when is this going on the Xero front page?
Android please, please, please and perhaps compatible with Android tablets too.
Can the contacts section function as a searchable database?
Dang, you guys are the bomb! Can’t wait to get this out to my freakin’ clients.
Hi tjfsu,
Gareth from Unleashed here. If you are needing an inventory solution that integrates directly with Xero, we would be happy to show you our solution and step you through its benefits. It doesn’t cost a lot, and could be exactly what you need, and help avoid a costly change of accounting systems too. Feel free to call or email us, we would be happy to accommodate you.
Looks great and realy lookng forward to giving it a try. However, with the nice little video…..if you’re within the UK, I’d be a litlle bit careful about throwing away your receipts!
Hi team
I previousily managed with the mobile interface on my iphone, but this has speeded up the process no end!! Good job!!
Can I request that you anable payments to be added to an invoice both in part and full as this would sincerely speed up our processing on the go!!
Onwards & Upwards!
Great work guys, really like the 4 digit pin code. My only request is to be able to submit expenses for approval.
Roll out the Android
Everyone knows Android is kicking apple’s butt at the moment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone#cite_note-Canalys_2009-full-56)
Yep being able to include inventory items would let it be used as an on-the-road sales tool (have reliable confirmation that unleashed is great otherwise).
I’d like users to at least be able to comment on transactions, if not reconcile them.
Uploading receipts for direct reconciliation with transactions, i.e. bypassing expense claims without cheating, that’d be might handy too.
I blame you entirely Xero that our expectations of accounting software are so darn high now :p
I could never get the m.xero app to do anything on my iPhone, this is better. However, I can’t seem to reconcile transactions on my bank accounts.
Xero, you’ve got my vote for the android version. Recently bought an Asus transformer and can’t wait to try out Xero Touch on it. Btw, with Asus coming out with the Padfone – http://event.asus.com/mobile/padfone/, the timing seems right for Xero.
I think it’s a good start, bit I think it’s a shame the iPad version makes no use at all of the larger screen: it could be so much more, and maybe will be?
My biggest problem though is the 4 digit PIN. I have two logins for completely separate companies, and having logged in as one and entered a PIN, there’s no way to logout and then login with my other credentials. I’ve had to use the only obvious option and invite myself as a user from one company to the other, but I really wanted to keep them completely separate.
Also, no support for Xero Petsonal?
BTW, I’m getting a lot of error messages when I try to load a company after logging in.
Loving the app, however it would be fantastic if the expense claims section supported multi-currency. I tried this out in the demo account but the functionality didn’t seem to be there? Am I missing something?
Specifically I’ve got a client who’s a travel journalist. He’s constantly on the road and incurring expenses in various currencies by cash. At the moment i’ve got him snapping photos of the receipts into Evernote which are entered into Xero at a later stage (with a manual conversion to AUD).
What I’d love for him to be able to do would be upgrade to the large plan and let Xero handle the currency conversions. So he can actually capture his rickshaw receipts in Japanese Yen straight to Xero.
Any plans to include multi-currency?
i think im going to sign up for xero now great news
Hi Andrew,
Regarding multi-currency, the problem is the amount that hits your bank statement can be at any rate and include other fees. So I always end up having to overwrite anyway. Haven’t worked out how to solve that yet.
Cheers
Rod
Fantastic first release of the app – only thing that would make it better would be the inclusion of price list items as mentioned above.
Any sign of a Windows Phone 7 app? I don’t ever intend to downgrade to an iPhone.
@Chris I’m very sorry but while the WP7 operating system is really impressive the WP7 browser is pretty useless. Currently it’s no better than IE7 is on the desktop.
By choosing to use the latest web technologies to build Xero Touch we’ve been able to target more than one device (which is what would have happened if we’d gone native only), but unfortunately WP7 doesn’t yet have the capabilities we need to make it all work.
Fortunately the next version of WP7 (codenamed Mango) is a big upgrade and looks really great but I wouldn’t expect a WP7 version of Xero Touch till early next year.
Craig
Hi Rod,
Cheers for the reply. In this case no amount hit’s the bank statement. Client is a sole trader and expense claims are “paid” against funds contributed.
Any expenses he’s incurring through the bank account are recorded separately.
Thoughts?
[...] week, Apple opened up an appstore for business applications. SAP, Oracle, Salesforce.com and even Xero are placing apps into the store. Many of the current crop of apps centre around simple functionality or reporting but sooner or [...]
Creating invoices on the road is my main use case for Xero Touch. Being able to choose the invoice branding is great. Agree with a few others above that inventory items would round it out.
Love the app, although as Andrew notes above multi-currency would be terrific for expenses “paid” against funds contributed.
That is a very slick advert video you put together, the standard exceeds so many TV ads, nice work.
Android app is prerequisite for me.
You guys are awesome. Downloaded the app and my customer is loving it. One minor detail – it’d be cool if inventory items are available when creating the invoice so we don’t have to retype it every time on the mobile app. Then my customer will love you guys even more and you’ll make us look like super heroes. Sweet!
Pleased to see some offering but disappointed that reconciling invoices isn’t available. Yes the 4-digit PIN for login is great – can we have that as an option on the website?
Great start but very disappointed that I can’t reconcile items in downtime when out and about with my phone. Great use of time spent in queues!
Using my fabulous Bank App – ANZgoMoney which does everything I need, I can’t see that this is a big requirement (apart from developer time of course).
If ANZ can do it why not Xero?
Only works in portrait and seems that you can’t reconcile bank accounts. Hardly seems worthwhile if you can’t do the basic functions you do everyday.
Hi, I’ve got two further major problems with Xero Touch.
First, and critical because we can’t use it with this problem, when creating an invoice it’s impossible to add a new tracking option. We use tracking to keep a rudimentary track on job costs, and the first invoice is the “prompt” to add a job number into tracking. I understand that tracking was probably not imagined for job costing, but it is what support suggest for our type of use, and it is our only option given the cost and over sophistication of the available addons.
Second, there appears to be no way to add a credit note? I accept that Touch has to be limited compared to full Xero, but it strikes me as such a no brainer

Second, there appears to be no way to add a credit note? I accept that Touch has to be limited compared to full Xero, but it strikes me as such a no brainer to have it in there, and such a usefull mobile function, that I’m surprised not to fond it.
Overall I’m finding Touch too limited. About 50% of the time I’m having to abort what I’m trying to do, and go to full Xero instead, which defeats the object! Even just a “go to Xero full” link inside Touch would help!
Sorry about the (partial) double post! I hit submit too soon, and there’s no edit option
Touch adds a real benefit to clients on the road who want to invoice as soon as they see a client, we have set up items to save all the typing on the phone screen as builders tend to have fat fingers, I was surprised when this wasn’t available on touch. Any idea when this will be added as many seem to be requesting it?
i run my own business, and I when i have to spend money out and about I don’t spend it personally and then get it reimbursed as expenses – I spend it on the company debit card, and then need to put the receipt in the file against the transaction.
Please could Xero Touch help me with this? It must be common behaviour?
The expenditure will of course be picked up by the bank statement, as I don’t want to waste time entering a Spend Money transaction if I don’t have to. But it would be good to have the receipt uploaded, perhaps with just a value added to it, so it could be auto-suggested? Or if that’s too complex then at least the facility to add a Spend Money transaction with a receipt photo.
Hi
Just wondering if we have a timeline for the Android App. It appears that you are putting one together but an idea of release would be great.
Weeks? Months? Years??
@Philip: Great – thank you. I’m trying to do it now, and seem to be able to create personal expenses but not Spend Money or similar for my business bank account. Please can you walk me through the key presses?
Would be great if we could view published reports on the iPad app. too hard to include?
[...] Watch the video to see Xero Touch in action and find out more on our blog: [...]
@Philip – I’m in the same boat as Nigel wanting to add an expense (and receipt image) as Spent Money and not needing to be reimbursed as using company account. Could you please share the tips on how this is done. Thanks
Thanks Philip, It’s great to hear so much development is happening constantly. Is there a way I can use the expense option (iPhone App) say when buying fuel then approve it without reimbursing myself.
Touch is great, except it doesn’t make a lot of sense on the iPad, as the larger screen makes this quite useable with the full online version of Xero. The only issue here is why have Xero chosen to use flash for the graphs, etc, on your homepage? Surely a more platform-friendly JavaScript option would have been better, or even a dynamically generated image? Obviously flash is a no-go on the iPad, but I also prefer to have flash turned off on my desktop too, as it is notoriously buggy.
Hi Philip,
Is there any time frame on the ‘much better’ expense claim feature? Also is there anything in the pipeline for being able to add expense payable with a copy of the receipt attached from the Xero Touch? I am a contractor so going around the expenses route is a long winded option for me…
Cheers
I have been using the application on the ipad and iphone and think that this has huge potential. It is a real shame that Accounts payables are not included in the application. This makes the utility of the application that much more limited as a management tool. Do Xero have any plans for expanding the application in the near future?
Hmmm not really ideal. I agree with Jonathan that there is huge potential with the mobile version, this was what actually pulled me away from my previous supplier. A little disappointing now. Hopefully it’s not too long before the app gets an update.
One thing which could be useful for deliveries of goods on credit is a feature whereby the customer can sign with their finger on the touch screen to acknowledge receipt of the goods. Otherwise a hardcopy signed DO is necessary.
When uploading an expense receipt, I can’t seem to input anything in the “from” field, so I end up with a “blank” on the Current Claim Screen once I’ve saved the expense receipt. I can then go back into the record and add a name to the “From” field, but surely I’m missing something in the original screen?!
@Hayden sounds like you’re running Xero Touch v1 on iOS5. If that’s the case updating the app to the latest version will help. You can update right from your phone by opening the App Store app and selecting the “Updates” tab.
If you are running the latest version and still seeing this behavior, please email support@xero.com so we can help you out.
Sorry if it has been answered already – but has the android app version been released yet?
Hi is it possible to have staff members be able to invoice on the road from this app but not be able to view bank account balances?
@Philip – Yes please – the sooner the better – we are a mobile service based business and it is essential really at the moment we are having to stuff around with receipt books and then posting out a tax invoice from the office!
Xero looks like a fantastic service and im really keen on switching my accounting serivce to you guys. The one thing stopping me at the moment is the lack of the Andriod App… seems its been on the wish list for some people here for a while now. Any rough time frame?
FYI – its the app that allows the camera functionality that is stopping at least 3 new customers from joining you at the moment.
Many thanks
@Russell Definitely on the cards for this year, and as you may have seen we’re pretty aggressively looking for new blood to help us out with everything on our mobile roadmap (and there’s a lot to do). The sooner we find the right people, the sooner we’ll have an Android app. We’re confident that the right team will come together in the next month or two.
I am hoping Xero will be bringing out an Andoid app this year and that we will be able to send invoices via the app! I am on the road with,my customers 24/7 and i use a tablet instead of a laptop and would find it so more helpful.
@Rory Preliminary work has begun but no timeframes yet.
Hi Xero team,
A big +1 to the android app from me. I have to admit, with Xero’s excellent reputation and recommendation through my accountant I was very surprised to discover there is no android app, given the relevance it would hold to a huge customer base.
Great to hear it is on the way though.
+1 for the android app. Any closer to a release date? wanting to use this asap.
@Craig Hi, we’re wanting to use the Android app ASAP too! At this point I can’t provide any more information than that in my last comment, but I can assure you it is being worked on right now and as soon as it begins to take shape we’ll give everyone a better idea of when to expect a release.
Is there a way to let me view the app in landscape mode vs. portrait? I am using a keyboard with the iPad for some things business-related, and its a pain to have to take the iPad out of the keyboard and switch it to portrait mode just for this app, if I already am using it in a keyboard case with landscape mode.
@Michelle – Not currently, but thank you for the feedback, we do want to add landscape support and will look to do so in a future release.

Love the 4 digit pin in place of email and full password. Makes it much easier to login on a mobile device.
