Adrian. Like you, we would love to see the Xero API extensions now, rather than the Q1 2010 as promised by Xero, to allow us to implement the same single button click posting of the payroll results to Xero that we have implemented on our other integrations with the leading online accounting packages. Where I do disagree with you is the importance of the integration. I believe most small businesses will want to reconcile their bank statements and for this reason MyPAYE would normally post the individual payments for each employee in the bank account. The current integration allows Xero users to run the payroll with their actual Xero Account Codes, without having to manually set them up, and they can wait until the API extension is available before posting them from MyPAYE to Xero.

You know when we say that Xero is always online, always there when you need it - well that applies to us Xero employees too. :)

What the ..? Head Honcho checking the blog in the early hours? Impressed, speaks volumes for Xero's attitude. I am one who thinks integration via your API will be the big thing in 2010, so I wasn't having a pop, I just thought the MyPAYE thing was a disappointment (and then realised that payroll to accounting is not really important anyway).

Time for the horlicks!

Adrian, we still have work to do to expose more and more of Xero through our API.

Regardless, we'll always trumpet any third party who chooses to work with or integrate with Xero, whether that's deep or shallow. Horses for courses!

I have looked at this and it seems the only integration is that MyPaye "links your Xero Account codes into MyPAYE and produces Nominal Reports for manual entry as Journals into Xero". Yes, you read it right - manual entry!

To be fair, the MyPAYE website does say that "automatic posting of Journals into Xero is coming soon" but, at least in my opinion, this is not really an integration and certainly not something that Xero should be trumpeting.

Thinking about this further though, is there a need for any payroll apps to be integrated with accounting apps? The only data that needs to be brought over into accounts is the payroll journal [52 weekly ones or 12 monthly ones] and, since the payroll journal deals with summary totals not individual transactions, entering such a journal manually is usually only a 5-minute job.

So Gary, when you say "makes you wonder why it took us so long", perhaps the answer is "because it is not actually needed"!
