Google sexy, fun, addictive … Xero!
That’s what Sara went to the video room to say on YouTube earlier this evening (New York time) when we accepted Xero’s Webby Award at Cipriani on Wall Street. The Webby’s are like the Oscars for the Internet but as Seth Meyers, the very funny host for the evening said: it’s almost like the Oscars, but longer and with less celebrities.
It truly was an amazing evening … incredible to be there representing Xero and answering questions about New Zealand (mostly, how long the flight was) while rubbing shoulders with some well-known Internetites. We made lots of connections, handed out many many cards so I’m sure Xero is well on its way to global stardom! We were even seated at the table with a team from NASA! After the acceptance speech was recorded for YouTube we were put into the Webby Randomizer for a chance to repeat the speech on stage – alas, we were not chosen at random. There’s no trophy to bring back for the Xero awards room but we took plenty of photos.
Here we are on a real red carpet!
The interior of Cipriani was stunning and the food wonderful (especially the caramel eclairs for dessert) and it was all extremely well organised considering there were about 1000 guests.
We met lots of people including Ben from Fail Blog and I Can Haz Cheeseburger (a personal favourite), Jake from Funny or Die, talked to some people from NPR and hung out with the other New Zealand winners who were there from Hyperfactory. I think the best 5 word speech of the night has to go to a marriage proposal – it was accepted but with over 1000 people standing and clapping the poor girl didn’t have much of a choice!
And there were even some Hollywood celebrities! Craig met Sara Silverman,
and Sara and Lucy met Lisa Kudrow.
We also saw Martha Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Molly Sims, Tim Berners-Lee (not exactly a Hollywood type but a celebrity to us) and surprise guest Cameron Diaz. Very exciting!
It was tough picking our five word speech, we had a few suggestions from our customers and a bunch of “good” ideas offered by the team. This board at the office (apologies if any of these offend) will serve as a reminder of a great trip – we’re on our way home tomorrow.
