90-day worker trial period
Great to see some common sense with the upcoming 90-day worker trial period legislation.
No grievance trial period ‘pro-worker’ says Business NZ
I think a lot of small businesses owners would like to give people a go but any employer knows it can be very difficult and expensive if you get the wrong person. We’re hearing of many businesses scaling down just so the owner doesn’t have to deal with staff. Small businesses are very cautious hiring. It’s like marrying after a 1 hour date!
Having a trial period makes it a lot easier for small business owners to take a chance. This law must make it easier for potential employees on the edge who need a chance to prove themselves. It must make it easier for small businesses to grow.
The concern of rogue employers just hiring and firing is well understood so hopefully the incidence of that behavior will be low. The benefits far outweigh the risk of misuse so this just makes sense.
It’s so important that we make our small businesses more productive. Good to see a step in the right direction.
Heard this last week. Someone quipped …
This recession is terrible, I’ve lost half my fortune and I’m still married.

I don’t really understand the opposition to this bill – why would an SME owner hire somebody, train them up over 90 days (at a considerable cost)and then fire them if they were doing a good job? I am all for worker rights but the right to be mediocre isn’t one of them.

A. To get cheap ie. non-casual rate labour for a busy period, then dump people when you don’t need them. I’m not saying this is good or bad, but that’s the reason people oppose the bill. This sort of labour law was what helped tip John Howard out of office over here in Australia last year – there were just too many examples of nasty venal small business people exploiting it and the electorate got fed up.
sorry…one other thing by the way….this Xero looks like a fantastic product. I’m sure you guys will do really well given competition like MYOB!
